7 Elements of Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling: This revolves around the idea of combining the art of telling stories with a variety of digital multimedia, such as images, audio, and video. Just about all digital stories bring together present information on a specific topic. The stories are typically just a few minutes long and have a variety of uses, including the telling of personal tales, the recounting of historical event, or as a means to inform or instruct on a particular topic.

Student Literacies:

Digital literacy- the ability to communicate with an ever-expanding community to discuss issues, gather information, and seek help

Global literacy- the capacity to read, interpret, respond, and contextualize messages from a global perspective

Technology literacy- the ability to use computers and other technology to improve learning, productivity, and performance; students who create digital sotries improve their skills by using software that combines a variety of multimedia tools including working with text, still images, audio, video and oftentimes, Web publishing.

Visual literacy- the ability to understand, produce and communicate through visual images

Information literacy- the ability to find, evaluate and synthesize information

There are three different types of Storytelling:

Personal narratives- stories that contain accounts of significant incidents in one’s life

Historical documentaries- stories that examine dramatic events that help us understand the past

Stories designed to inform and instruct the viewer on a particular concept or practice

7 Steps of Digital Storytelling:

Point of view- since DS can be used by anyone, the point of view can be by all students who create a video A dramatic question- how was technology used in each grade level to answer their question

Emotional content- I'm not quite sure what this exactly means but I see it as lack of resources for the students and not having certain availabilities

The gift of your voice- I would explain to the students what exactly I am doing and the reason for it and explain everything in more detail and in a way for them to understand and enjoy what i am video-taping

The power of the soundtrack- I think that the music is a big thing in a video, it helps the students enjoy what is going on but at the same time it can take away from the content if it becomes a distraction

Economy- I think put the information in the most simple form is always the best way to teach because then the student isn't trying to break down the information and trying to figure out what is being said or given to them

Pacing – putting the information in the right order and making sure everything is done at the right time and best done for the pace of each student is important because the teacher needs to find the balance between each student and that will be best for the class.

The Process of Learning

Digital Storytelling

Storytelling- Images of sitting around the campfire in the summer, the fireplace in your home in the wintertime, the dinner table with your family or saying good night to your children are conjured up in my head. Listening to fairy tales, passing a personal family story on from one generation to the next, creating a conspirative bond while telling and listening to ghost stories, personalizing a fact or concept by weaving a human element that creates a connection to the listener are just a few ways we are familiar with storytelling since we have been children. As educators we know that students thrive, if we take content and weave in a story that involves them or give them a glimpse in our own lives. All of these storytelling instances have one thing in common. They all are being told to a limited audience, they are all being told by a limited group of people.New tools allow us to expand the concept of storytelling in many ways.• Suddenly it is possible to give your voice an audience of millions by simply uploading your story to social networking sites.• Suddenly a moment in time can be captured with sound and video and passed on, even long after the storyteller is gone.• Suddenly adding many voices together can create a story. The story lies in the diversity of perspectives, points of view, and collective knowledge• Suddenly a story has the possibility to literally move on. The story takes on its own life, allowing all contributors and listeners to shape the story.

A VoiceThread is an online media album that can hold essentially any type of media (images, documents and videos) and allows people to make comments in 5 different ways -- using voice (with a microphone or telephone), text, audio file, or video (with a webcam) -- and share them with anyone they wish. A VoiceThread allows group conversations to be collected and shared in one place, from anywhere in the world. -- I think this is really great because teachers can put their own voice into this and students can interact in a new way. I know in one of my classes currently my teacher does this and it's really great because even though I'm not in the classroom it's still like the teacher is there in person teaching me. I also think it is just a fun way to learn and see things because it's being digitally done,

Slidecast is a great way for students to interact in a new way. It has students make powerpoints and show a new a creative side to their learning. This is a really fun tool to use because I can upload all my ideas and pictures into this mini slide and it is in a video. It's a lot of fun and I can't wait to work more with it.

Internet Resources :)

How can I use a variety of Internet resources in your unit plan?
How could I use some other communication tools in the classroom?

Internet is a huge resource today in schools and in everyones life in general. There are many ways to use the internet and now being wireless, students can access information more easily and quickly. Having this advantage in going into the education system, I can have students research their information. Students will ask themselves questions and will be able to look things up quickly and on the point. One way with blogging I can have students write about what they have researched or even found and I can connect with the students in another way besides in the actual classroom and hands on. Students can now take control of their education and research on their own.

Kid-friendly search engines:
There are many kid-friendly search engines that you can provide for your students. These search engines have are safe and realiable. This tool can help your students find many different things that they are looking for. I would use these search engines to show my students how to rearch for information for their for a project. Some serach engines that are Kid-Friendly are: Ask for Kids!, Kids Konnect, Squirrel Net, and Dinosearch.

Chat and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol):
One big thing going around in high school and colleges are different chatting devices. Many students will go through Yahoo! or even MSN Messenger. One way to better communicate with peers is through chat because they are talking one-on-one or even in a group chat. Students can give feedback to each other instantly and even talk through microphones. Chatting is a big way to network and connect with others through a different form of talking. I can set up a classroom chat on a safe site and the students can talk to each other after school hours about school work or even what is going on. Student's will be able to connect with the teacher through the chatting too because I am the creator of it. Also, VoIP's are internet resources that can turn a standard internet connection into a way to place phone calls, send instant messages or text messages, or can be shared files.

Images:
The ineternet is very resourceful with pictures. Students may question what something looks like and they can automatically look it up and have the results in seconds. For example, and child would like to know what different computers look like so they can go to Google and type in computers. Instantly they have the results they want an have a bigger meaning of different types of computers. One way that students can use images is through projects. Students can send each other pictures of research that they have found, or even pictures they have taken themselves of their surroundings.

Tehcnology is growing everyday and it is a useful source. Everyone uses it and being able to bring it more into the classroom is great. Students love learning more through technology because they do get bored with paper and pencil. Tehcnology and using different resources like chat and the forward of pictures will help students connect in their class as well as with their peers.

Blogging in my future classroom

David Warlick

This link was really great. I saw a new way of blogging. I just thought it was something for people to just put random stuff on a page and hope people are going to see what they do, but I was totally wrong. Warlick really expressed how he felt as a person and as an educator. He really showed his deepest sides of him and really put all his feelings out on the page. I was really touched because I didn't know what to expect, and this whole thing exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed ready what he had to say and how he wrote. He typed as if he were writing a personal novel and as if he was speaking straight to me and not just put it on the computer. I see blogging as a way to express how your day is going or even just a random event that happened in your day. It's great to see that people put their feelings out on a page and it can really mean something, and as you read what they say it feels as if they are speaking to you personally.

As a future Special Ed teacher I won't be able to use blogging as much as other teachers. I do have the situation of having students that are not able to type or ones that can't speak. As a future educator though, I would love to use blogging. I think it's a great way for students to express themselves and a way for them connect to other students in a different way. For those students that can't type, I would have them tell me what they wanted to say and I would type it for them. Even though some might have disabilities, they would be able to blog along with the class and they wouldn't feel left out. Also, for the students who can't speak, this would be a great way to put their words on type. They wouldn't be able to tell me what they think or even participate fully by speaking to the class so they could easily blog about it, or even post it to me as the teacher. There are so many great ways I could use this for my future classroom and even though I will be faced with obstacles with my students, I will be able to use the whole blogging technique. I also think using blogging in my classroom would be great because the students do get tired of writting everything by hand and when they do get to touch a computer their faces light up so brightly and it's great to see that. So I think I would use it to change up what they do on a regular basis from paper and pencil to using a computer and being able to type what they feel or want to say.

Inquiry and Project-Based Learning

Inquiry-based learning is when one seeks for the truth, information, or knowledge - seeking information by questioning. Everyone always starts out when given something by asking a question. They either ask, "what do I do with this?", "how can I use it?", or even "where did this come from and how did it come about?". Inquiry-based learning is used by all people. We all ask questions and wonder things. This type of learning helps students get involved with seeking the truth and answering any questions that they might have. This helps them look future into a problem and find the answer. A well-designed inquiring learning produces knowledge and formation that can be widely applied. For example, in a science class, students can observe things from outside and talk about what they see and talk to one another about the knowldge they already have of it.

Inquiry-based learning is also very important because it helps students look future into the question. They may ask us a question and we should always reply in a question which makes them think deeper into their thoughts and have them look more into what they are asking us. We need to conitue to ask students qestions when we are asked one because giving them the answer is just the short cut to their knowledge and by asking a question back they can really think about what they are asking and this helps them explore things. Inquiry-based learning is a great way for students to research and explore new things and for them to really think harder about what they are looking for. I think students are given answers so easily these days and by asking a question when asked a question really helps them see things differently and look further into what they are asking.

Answering a question / High School (but works for all grade levels)

EQ: How do I answer this question?

This is a good essential question because it is very broad. This works for all grade levels and even disabilities. This question can be used in all subject areas and in different situations. It is great from the beginning of a person’s education to even the end. This can help children narrow down information that is given from reading or general information they know about the question. Also, this question is one that everyone thinks about daily, I know I do when I get presented a question and I’m not sure what sources I have so I simply start by asking myself how I can answer it.

UQ1: What information is given to me?
TEKS: 111.31. Algebra 1-B (A.4) The student understands the importance of the skills required to manipulate symbols in order to solve problems and uses the necessary algebraic skills required to simplify algebraic expressions and solve equations and inequalities in problem situations. (A) find specific function values, simplify polynomial expressions, transform and solve equations, and factor as necessary in problem situations;(B) use the commutative, associative, and distributive properties to simplify algebraic expressions; and(C) connect equation notation with function notation, such as y = x + 1 and f(x) = x + 1.

UQ2: How do I use the internet to help?
TEKS: 126.22. Computer Science- C. (4) Information acquisition. The student uses a variety of strategies to acquire information from electronic resources, with appropriate supervision. The student is expected to: (A) use local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), including the Internet and intranet, in research and resource sharing; and (B) construct appropriate electronic search strategies in the acquisition of information including keyword and Boolean search strategies.

UQ3: Is there any other resources available than what I am given?
TEKS: 113.33. World History Studies- B. (2) To support the teaching of the essential knowledge and skills, the use of a variety of rich primary and secondary source material such as biographies and autobiographies; novels; speeches and letters; and poetry, songs, and artworks is encouraged. Selections may include excerpts from Hammurabi's Code. Motivating resources are also available from museums, art galleries, and historical sites.
